The last train to North Woolwich is tomorrow night. And good riddance to it, though I'll miss the romantic middle-of-nowhere feeling of North Woolwich station itself...

For a year and a half (from February 1988 until around July 1989) I took the train every morning from Dalston Kingsland (or Hackney Central) to North Woolwich, walked through the foot tunnel and went to work in Woolwich town centre, and then did the return journey every evening ... and a few years later I think did the other section of the route from time to time (Dalston Kingsland to Richmond) for a different job. Three trains an hour, and if a West Ham match was on, they'd replace the fairly grotty modern-ish trains with much older slam door trains (the kind that had at least eight doors on each carriage, one between each set of back to back seats, and required sufficient finger strength to pinch ridges in sheet steel to open!) I don't know if it was for capacity, for grafiti resistance (of the "who cares" variety) or for speed in boarding and decanting passengers ...

... I barely remember North Woolwich station, and it was fairly stark and windswept, but I remember watching them setting up the Jean Michel Jarre Docklands concert from around there, and watching the planes heading to/from London City Airport ...

... I'll miss it.
