I just noticed NASA's World Wind. It's like Google Earth for geeks -- animations and overlays for Earth at night, earthquakes, hurricanes, temperatures, pressures, all sorts of stuff. That was exactly the comment I was about to make, save the bit about laptops. However, http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html confirms a report that Google Earth is now in Beta for Linux. So the do-no-evil empire wins again, apparently. Grump.
